[Workshop] Basing Miniatures

Last updated on August 31, 2016 - Below is the standard way I base my miniatures--a variety of rock.gravel, and some grass spread at different parts of the base. So far, all my miniatures are based in the same exact way. In addition, all of them have a magnet added under their base. To add more variety to bases, I plan to try other ways for basing miniatures, such as using texture stamps.

Base Trim

  1. Black
  2. Nutmeg Brown (require several coats to get good average ~3) on the trims. Brown base for standard fantasy themed miniatures and Warhammer 40K). Gray base for Chibi fantasy themed miniatures and Infinity.

Standard Base Scheme

Adding Sand

  1. 1:1 PVA glue to water to the entire base.
  2. Dipped into modelling sand. Sand could have a variety of sizes, from fine to coarse,
  3. Removed excess sand by flicking or tapping the base
  4. Black coating. slightly watered down at times to get good coverage over all the sand.

Painting Sand

  1. Overbrush/Drybrush -Burnt Umber (heavy coverage)
  2. Overbrush/Drybrush - Nutmeg Brown (heavy coverage)
  3. Overbrush/Drybrush - Country Tan (moderate coverage)
  4. Drybrush - Antique White (light coverage)

Depending if I want a darker or lighter ground, adjust the amount applied of the last couple of steps.

Adding Flock

Flock is added after miniature and base have been sealed.
  1. 1:1 PVA glue to water to various parts of the base.
  2. Using tweezers, add static grass to these regions.
  3. Knock off any excess grass by flicking or tapping the base.
  4. Blow on grass to make it stand up.
  5. With time, lightly brush off any flock that did not stick on the base.

Texture Stamp Base Scheme

By using putty and texture stamps, I can create a large variety of base detail. This section is still a work in progress.
