[Archives] Empire Duelist with Brace of Pistols

Empire Duelist with Brace of Pistols, Empire Duelist with Sword, Empire Captain with Hammer and Pistol, and Empire Captain with Sword and Orc Head are the last batch of miniatures I painted before starting this blog in 2015. These four metal miniatures were painted to be used as part of a Reikland mercenary warband for the Mordheim skirmish game. This model was used to represent a Reikland Youngblood, This model and the Empire Duelist with Sword are part of an Empire Collector's Miniature series from Games Workshop. Like the Duelist with Sword, the Duelist with Brace of Pistols looks more like a person in gear for a fight, but not necessarily equipped for war.

Skull White drybrushed over Black undercoat
Notes: The other young blood for the Reikland Warband, so there was a mix of red and white in the clothing of the figure. I tried a different approach in painting the miniature by drybrushing Skull White over a black undercoat. This provides a base for "staining" the miniature with citadel washes. My attempt on using that method did not yield a pleasing result. Thus, I repainted the miniature with my usual painting methods. The skull white over the black did provide a nice outline for painting the miniature and is something I tried to use before painting some of the miniatures in 2016. Another thing I experimented with is using the metallic paints from Folk Art on the Scabbard and to apply a Blue wash over some portions of the scabbard. I was quite over cautious on applying the blue wash on metal, so it did not have a dramatic effect. The original binder notes on page 36.

I wanted to paint him to be very different from the Duelist with Sword who had light skin and blond hair. So for the Duelist with a Brace of Pistols I went with tanned skin and black hair. It turned out to be nice contrast. I still feel a need to do better in painting black colored parts of the miniatures. I attempted  to paint in the actual eyes with mixed results.
