[Workshop] Decals

Applying decals onto models seems pretty tricky. I worried that after finishing painting the minature, you will be able to still see the transparent outline of the decal. After researching on the topic and successfully applying them to a miniature, I found this method to work well for my purposes. The instructions below is mostly a combination of directions from Citadel Miniatures Painting Guide (1992, Mike McVey) and Microscale Setting Solution for Decals (Micro Set and Micro Sol).

Preparation

After I finish painting the miniature, I apply gloss varnish on  the entire model. I have read some people apply decal then paint on top of it. I have not tried that, but would like to do more research on those that have done that.

Adding Decal

1.  Decal transfer is cut out carefully with a modelling knife.
2.  Brush Micro Set solution onto the model where the decal is to be applied.
3.  Decal Transfer is then dipped into water and slide off backing paper into position on the model using a damp paint brush and tweezers.
4.  Carefully brush more Micro Set on top of the decal.
5.  Wait for a few minutes for the decal to soften, then press the decal down. The transfer is dabbed carefully with a tissue. The next step helps the decal to adhere better to irregular surfaces.
6.  Using a soft brush, gently apply Micro Sol onto the decal, being careful not to move the decal during the application. Do not touch decal after applying Micro Sol. as the decal is now soft and can easily be distorted. Allow decal to dry completely. On surfaces with many irregularities, additional applications may be necessary. Allow Micro Sol to dry between applications. If air bubbles become trapped under the decal, prick with a needle and apply Micro Sol.

Finishing Touches

1.  Once decal is completely dey, reapply gloss varnish over the area with the decals.
2.  Apply matte varnish over the entire model to complete the protective coating,
